Evolution in ID card technology
The type of ID cards that are used today is a far cry from what was used in the past. Our identity is now richer and more complex as a result of the new technologies that are used in making ID cards.
In the past ID card was used exclusively for very important purposes. Presently, you can use your ID card to do basically anything. To gain access to your workplace or office, you are going to have to badge yourself in. For you to gain access to a building in the past, you are going to need a metal key. Today we still use metal keys, but there are more and more opening for us to use electronic keys.
This is only possible because of new technologies that are available. These technologies offer more security, privacy, monitoring, and convenience.
We are next going to be looking at some identification technology that was used in the past.
Pin code for a keypad
This is one of the first methods of identification that was used in the past. The reason why it was popular back then is that pins could easily be changed. What this means is that access could be restricted easily. Despite the fact that it gave its users a sense of security, there were still some issues with it. The fact that the pin was easily shared made it very easy for it to be stolen. A lot of users back then were alarmed, because they don’t want their personal information to fall into the wrong hands.
As time when on, pin code for keypad slowly faded off. What took its place was known as a barcode. What made it special back then was that it was able to store data by varying the width and the spacing of parallel lines. Even more, they did not require card readers for them to be used. It was very easy to duplicate. A printer or a photocopier was used back then duplicate it.
Wiegand card became popular in the early 2000s. Information was stored on a specially processed wire. The fact that it was much secured was made it gained popularity very quickly. Personal information that was stored in it could not be copied or altered. Even more, they were very durable and could last for a very long time. The only problem with it was that it was expensive. Since a lot of people could not afford using it, it slowly lost faded off. The production of Wiegand card was halted in 2013. Now, only a handful of people are using it.
Magnetic strip card
The magnetic disk came into use as soon as the Wiegand card lost its popularity. Everybody had access to it because it was very affordable and easy to use. The magnetic card stores data on high coercive magnetic strips. The only issue it had was that it was prone to wear and tear. What this means is that it doesn’t last for a very long time and likely need to be replaced after a period of time. The magnetic strip card was used until a new identity technology came along.
Proximity card quickly become prominent because it can store a lot more data than the magnetic stripe card. It was convenient to use. The proximity card was the first, contactless card that was made. It can be read without it being inserted into a card reader. You can badge yourself into any building with it, all you have to do is to take it four meters to a card reading device.
Smart cards are what is presently used by a lot of people today. It is more secured especially when it is being compared to other ID cards. The information that is embedded in it needs to be decrypted by a card reader. It can be used for various purposes and can store a large amount of data. Even more, it can be accessed using a wide range of devices.
